B2 Design Term Project
Design Tutor: Rayleen Hill
Blockhouse hill, Lunenburg, NS

x&y incorporates six residential units and is located on Block House Hill, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The units are divided evenly between two buildings, and are designed to appeal to a wider societal population; with 1/3rd of the units meeting barrier-free design.

Each building offers one work/live unit, where the tenant will engage in a studio space that offers a place to display their passion. x&y’s dual facade looks to respond to its position between Sylvia Park and the Back Harbor inlet. Abstracting the axial directions between the ornament and the modern, resulting in a patched facade that can be seen throughout Lunenburg.

The facade looks to establish a material monument that is specific to its cultural context while using topography to hide the imposing nature of the four-floor structure.

Live/work
The units that are colored tan are an opportunity for someone to live where they create. Adjoining a studio to a residential unit, the studio on the x axis is for presentation, while the y studio is for creation.
